Temple Church

Temple Church, located in the historic legal district of London, is one of the city’s most iconic medieval churches. Built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century, it served as the order’s English headquarters and played a significant role in the history of medieval England. The church is situated between Fleet Street and the River Thames, within the Inner and Middle Temple, two of the four Inns of Court that have been central to the legal profession in England for centuries.

Temple Church is renowned for its distinctive round nave, a feature inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This design choice reflects the Templars’ mission to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. The Round Church, completed in 1185, is one of the few surviving examples of this architectural style in England. Attached to the round nave is the rectangular chancel, added in the 13th century, where much of the church’s later historical and religious activity took place.

Inside the church, visitors can see the effigies of medieval knights, believed to represent members of the Knights Templar. These stone figures, lying flat on the ground, add to the church’s medieval character and evoke its storied past. The church is also known for its beautiful stained glass windows and intricately carved stone details.
