Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is a monumental statue of Jesus Christ located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Standing 30 meters tall on the peak of the 700-meter Corcovado mountain within the Tijuca Forest National Park, it has become an iconic symbol of Brazil and a landmark recognized globally.

Designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and created by French sculptor Paul Landowski, the statue was completed in 1931 after nearly a decade of construction. Its arms stretch 28 meters wide, symbolizing peace and openness.

Constructed primarily of reinforced concrete clad in a mosaic of triangular soapstone tiles, Christ the Redeemer is noted for its durability and ability to withstand the area’s frequent thunderstorms. Despite this, the statue has undergone several restorations to repair damage from weather and lightning strikes.

Christ the Redeemer attracts millions of visitors each year who make the pilgrimage via a steep railway or a series of escalators and elevators. From the pedestal of the statue, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro, including sights such as the Sugarloaf Mountain, the MaracanĂ£ Stadium, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, and several of Rio’s famous beaches.
