Villa Borghese is one of the largest and most significant public parks in Rome, covering around 80 hectares in the northern part of the city centre. Originally developed in the early 17th century by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the park was designed as a private villa and garden complex reflecting Renaissance and early Baroque ideals of landscape architecture, integrating natural woodland with formal avenues, fountains, and sculptures.

The gardens were designed to complement the Borghese Gallery, which remains the park’s cultural centrepiece. The gallery houses a notable collection of paintings and sculptures by artists such as Caravaggio, Bernini, Titian, and Raphael. The villa itself was intended both as a suburban retreat and as a space to display the cardinal’s art collection to distinguished visitors, reflecting the role of patronage and the display of wealth in early modern Rome.

Within Villa Borghese, various sections serve different recreational, cultural, and educational functions. The park contains the Bioparco di Roma, the city’s zoological garden established in 1911, and the Globe Theatre, a replica of Shakespeare’s theatre used for Italian-language performances. There is also the Casa del Cinema, hosting film festivals and screenings throughout the year.
The landscape design features avenues lined with pine and plane trees, artificial lakes with boat rentals, and landscaped gardens with neoclassical temples, such as the Temple of Aesculapius. The Pincio Terrace on the southern edge of the park offers panoramic views over Piazza del Popolo and central Rome.
Villa Borghese remains a significant urban green space, used for leisure walking, jogging, cycling, and informal gatherings. It provides an example of how aristocratic estates were gradually transformed into public parks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following Italian unification. Today, it combines cultural heritage, historical architecture, and recreational areas, serving residents and tourists alike as a place for art appreciation, outdoor activity, and quiet retreat within the urban environment of Rome.
