Thames Path

The Thames Path is a long-distance National Trail that follows the course of the River Thames from its source in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier in east London. The route extends for approximately 185 miles (298 kilometres), passing through a wide range of landscapes, from rural countryside to densely built urban areas. It provides a continuous riverside route linking small villages, historic towns and the capital.

The trail begins near Thames Head, close to the village of Kemble in Gloucestershire, where the river emerges as a small stream. In its early stages, the path crosses open farmland and meadows, with relatively flat terrain and limited development. As the river widens, the route passes through towns such as Cricklade and Lechlade before reaching Oxford, where it begins to take on a more recognisable form.

Further downstream, the Thames Path continues through areas of cultural and historical significance, including Abingdon, Wallingford and Henley-on-Thames. The section between Henley and Windsor is particularly associated with the river’s role in leisure and boating, with regattas and riverside properties reflecting its long-standing recreational use. The route then passes through Windsor, where it runs close to Windsor Castle, before entering the outskirts of London.

Within London, the character of the trail changes significantly. The path becomes more urban, passing landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral and Tower Bridge. It continues east through redeveloped docklands and riverside walkways before reaching its endpoint at the Thames Barrier.

The Thames Path is generally flat and well maintained, making it accessible to a wide range of walkers. Many sections are also suitable for cycling, although this varies, particularly in urban areas. The trail is well waymarked and supported by transport links, allowing it to be walked in sections or as a continuous route.

Today, the Thames Path provides a structured way to follow England’s most well-known river. It combines natural scenery with historical and urban environments, offering a varied long-distance walking experience across southern England.
