Vereda dos Balcões (PR11) is a short and accessible hiking trail located in the Ribeiro Frio area of central Madeira. The path is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length (3 kilometres round trip) and is considered one of the easiest official walking routes on the island. It follows a section of the Levada da Serra do Faial through Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and concludes at the Balcões viewpoint.
The trail begins near the Ribeiro Frio trout hatchery and follows a level path alongside an irrigation channel. The route is well-maintained and suitable for walkers of all ages and fitness levels. It passes through native laurel forest, with frequent sightings of endemic flora such as tree heather, Madeira mahogany, and various species of mosses and ferns. Birdwatching is common along the path, particularly for species such as the Madeira firecrest and chaffinch.
The endpoint of the trail is the Balcões viewpoint, a stone platform overlooking the Ribeira da Metade valley. On clear days, the viewpoint offers panoramic views of the central mountain range, including Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres, and Pico Ruivo. The surrounding cliffs and ridges often attract photographers and are a highlight of short visits to Madeira’s interior.
Due to its ease and proximity to road access, Vereda dos Balcões is frequently included in guided tours and half-day itineraries. It is often visited in combination with nearby attractions such as the Ribeiro Frio trout hatchery or the longer Levada do Furado trail. The trail can experience mist and low cloud, particularly in the early morning or during winter months, which may obscure views.
There are basic facilities near the starting point, including cafés, parking, and public restrooms. As with other forest trails, weather conditions can change quickly, and appropriate footwear is recommended.
Vereda dos Balcões remains one of the most accessible and frequently visited walking trails in Madeira, offering a brief but rewarding experience of the island’s endemic forest and mountainous scenery.
