Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Post-Impressionist Dutch painter renowned for his contribution to the foundations of modern art. Despite little recognition during his lifetime and struggles with mental illness, Van Gogh produced over 2,000 works of art, with roughly 860 oil paintings created in the last decade of his life.
Born in the town of Zundert in the Netherlands, Van Gogh pursued various vocations before turning to art at age 27. Initially, his work was influenced by Dutch masters, characterized by somber tones. However, his artistic style radically evolved after moving to Paris in 1886, where he was exposed to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. His palette became brighter and his brushwork more expressive, leading to the creation of his distinctive style.
His most acclaimed works include “Starry Night,” “Sunflowers,” and a series of self-portraits. These works are celebrated for their emotive use of color, energetic brushwork, and his ability to depict the intense reality of his inner world.
Van Gogh’s life was marred by mental instability. In 1888, following a severe breakdown, he admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he continued to create art. Tragically, Van Gogh took his own life in 1890, believing himself a failure.
Despite his tragic life, Van Gogh’s impact on art history is immeasurable.
